Mary Ann ADDERLEY
b. abt 1855-1860 Ireland d. after 1901 ?
Father: ?
Mother: Ann ?
PURE CONJUCTURE; WARNING !!!
At the present time, this family is pure conjecture, as being the family of Joseph Adderley. The reason I have listed Mary Ann Adderley alone is because her son Joseph was clearly illegitimate, as her daughter Ellen also appears to be, with little or no hope at this stage, of discovering who their respective father's might have been.
Notes:
I first found Mary Ann Adderley in the 1881 census:
115 Rose Vale, Everton, Liverpool
Ann ADDERLY Head Wid 79 Ireland
Joseph ADDERLY Son U 28 Lpool, Ireland Porter
Mary Ann ADDERLY Daur Wid 26 Ireland Charwoman
Joseph ADDERLY Son U 4 Lpool
(Clearly it was impossible for a 79 year old to have 4 year old son. Secondly, a check of the 1871 census, shows Mary Ann was an Adderley by birth and Ann's daughter, so it was unlikely she was a widow, as implied)
Mary Ann never seems to have married though she claims the name Cronin in the 1891 census.
1891 census:
111 Warwick St, Toxteth Park;
Cronin/Cronan, Mary Ann head widow 32, lancs liverpool
Joseph Cronin son 14; lancs liverpool
Ellen Cronin daughter 1, lancs liverpool
Joseph Adderley brother single, 34, gen lab. lancs liverpool
Ann Kehoe, niece 17, lancs liverpool
The census for 1901 is the same as 1891
While Joseph's age is a little different to the one he supplied on his marriage cert, this family seems to be creative with ages, as can be seen in their census returns.
Joseph was probably an Adderley til he was at least 10 or 12, his mother then switched his name to Cronin (which leaves the question, why would he change it back after he was an adult?). Joseph was still listed under the name Cronin in the 1901 census, at which time he claimed to be just 22. It appears he married in 1900, to a Sarah Cowden, who died within months of this marriage. (Joseph is listed as a widow in 1901 census)
