• Maryborough & Dunolly Advertiser Wednesday 25 June 1862
  A numerous party met on Monday evening to celebrate the opening of the Two Brewers Hotel, of which Mr. Knight, one of our Council, is the proprietor. An excellent supper was given to his guests by Mr. Knight; and, under the able presidency of Mr. Casey, assisted by Mr. Harkness as vice-chairman, a very agreeable evening was spent. We wish Mr. Knight every success.
   
• Maryborough Advertiser 8th May, 1882. Monday
  A most serious accident happened to the Mayor of Maryborough, Mr. G. Knight, on Friday evening. Whilst driving along Carlyle-street, his horse suddenly took fright and overturned the vehicle by kicking over the traces and rushing violently against some obstacle. Mr. Knight was pitched out and falling heavily, broke his collar-bone and two or three ribs. After being removed to his residence medical attendance was sent for, but although every care was taken he continued in great pain all Friday night and throughout Saturday. The horse was captured shortly after the accident by some bystanders. On enquiry last night we were glad to learn the Mayor was somewhat better.
   
• The Talbot Leader Tuesday 9 May 1882
  Mr G. Knight, Mayor of Maryborough, met with a serious accident when returning from a drive on Friday. Mr Knight was leisurely driving to the stables, when the horse commenced kicking, and turned so sharply round that the jerk displaced the seat, and threw Mr Knight out of the buggy. He fell heavily on his head and shoulder, sustaining a broken collar-bone,and the fracture of several ribs.
   
• Argus Country News Saturday 6 May 1882 Maryborough, Friday
  The mayor of the town, Mr G. Knight, met with a very severe accident this evening. As he was driving along Carlyle-st. in his buggy, the horse shied, overturned the vehicle, and pitched Mr Knight out. Being an elderly man he fell heavily, breaking his collar-bone, and two or three ribs. The doctor attending thinks part of a broken bone has penetrated one lung. Great sympathy is expressed for Mr Knight throughout the borough.

  Mr Geo. Knight, the mayor, this afternoon (Tuesday) succombed to the injuries he received a few days ago by being thrown from his buggy. Very general regret is expressed throughout the borough. Mr Knight had been in the legate 13 years in the council. the funeral is to take place on Thursday.

  The Death of the Mayor
  It is a very unpleasant duty at all times to record the death of one of the old pioneers of this town, but the task is rendered doubly irksome when the deceased dies under such exceptional circumstances as the late Mr. George Knight, senr.
  This gentleman passed away after a brief but very painful illness - caused by an unfortunate accident - at a quarter to 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon, being at the time in office as mayor of Maryborough. During the quarter of a century that this place has been a borough, it is the first time we have ever been called upon to chronicle the demise of a councillor then holding the mayoral chair. Fears were entertained from the moment the nature of the mishap was generally known, that his worship would not recover. His age and increasing infirmities being sadly against him, and when the additional information was published that one of the lungs was pierced by a broken bone, hope was nearly abandoned. The event justified the general misgivings.
  Mr. George Knight, senr., was born in Kent, Eng, 1818, and on growing to maturity, started a business as a brewer in Wandsworth, a suburb of London. where he remained for some years. He came to the colony in the days of the gold fever in 1852, by the ship 'Blackheath'. About two years after his arrival, he was joined by his son, and the two started a brewery business in Blackwood. Things did not go well with them, however, as they could have expected and they removed from thence successively to Buninyong, Bet-Bet and White Hills. Establishments were started in all of these places, but a lengthened stay was not made in either. In 1857 the Messrs. Knight finally came to this town, where they at once settled in Nolan Street, built a brewery and opened the Two Brewers Hotel. Success attended them in their venture, everything went well and a thriving business was developed.
  The deceased mayor first entered public life about twenty-one years ago. The municipal records show that on the 3rd december 1861, the borough council met, and Cr. Hawkes introduced Cr. Knight, the new member. He continued to occupy his position as a local magnate for an uninterrupted period of seven years, with credit, and it was not until the August election of 1868, which would appear to have been a particularly warm one, that he lost his seat.
  Cr. Knight on that occassion retired, with the Mayor (Cr. Lowenstein) and Cr. Harle. All these stood for re-election and the result of the polling was as follows:- Robert Harle 177; A. Lowenstein 161; W. Field 121; G. Knight 92; Brooks Clay 67; W. Gilchrist 64. The defeated gentleman then retired for some time into private life but continued to be a useful citizen.....being re-elected to council January 2nd 1876 and so continuing until his death.
  The most hearty feeling is exhibited throughout the neighbourhood at the sad occurrence, not one person in the community who knew the deceased does not deplore the untimely fate of a good, kindly, old gentleman, whose influence has done much through many years to make the town as it should be. He always had a smile & friendly word for everyone, bearing whatsoever distinctions were conferred him, with a homely absense of assumption, which was most pleasant to observe. Last December the deceased completed his 64th year, and he had only recently married a second time.... The funeral takes place tomorrow, in the meantime, the town is in half-mourning, flags being at half-mast, and shops partially closed as a tribute of respect to Mr. Knight's memory.

  Great preparations are being made for the funeral of the late mayor, Mr George Knight, which takes place tomorrow. All the local bodies are to take part in the procession, and the Freemasons and other lodges. Deep and widespread regret prevails at his demise. The flags have been at half-mast today throughout the town.
   
• Argus Country News Friday 12 May 1882 Maryborough, Thursday
  The funeral of the late mayor, Mr G. Knight took place today. The procession included the local brass band, which played the Dead March, the representatives of the Maryborough and Talbot lodges of Freemasons, Protestant Alliance Society, & c., and Maryborough coucil. Nearly 50 vehicles followed the hearse. All the business places were closed, as a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased gentleman. The Rev E.H. Dubois, incumbent of Christ Church officiated at the grave.
   
• Maryborough Advertiser Friday 12 May 1882
  There have not been wanting evidences of local sympathy in the untimely death of the late Mayor. Very rarely has the public shown such feeling upon the demise of any person, but the following telegram, which was received by the borough council on Wednesday, must be taken as a token of exceptional esteem, and a compliment to the townspeople:- "You will be good enough to express to the Town Council my deep regret at the loss they have sustained by the death of their much respected Mayor. - Charles Young, Minister of Water Supply, To the Town Clerk Maryborough". It must be explained that this courtesy was produced by the Minister's appreciation of Mr Knight's genial conduct on the many occasions in which they have met on business connected with the requirements of the borough.
  Town Clerk's Report
  Cr. Lowenstein said before we go any further with the business, it is the duty of the council to record their regret at the sudden demise of the late Mayor, and to instruct the Town Clerk to write a letter of sympathy to the widow in her bereavement. It is not necessary for me to say much, Cr. Knight has been for many years a member of this body - for a longer time, in fact, than most of us here, and whatever I could add would not increase the regard in which we all hold his memory. I therefore move that the regret of this Council be duly recorded in the minutes, and that the Town Clerk be instructed to do as I suggested. Cr. Taylor: I have much pleasure, or rather, I should say, I regret to have to second the motion. In doing so I can only endorse the remarks of Cr, Lowenstein. I recollect the first time Cr. Knight was elected, in the early days, and I am perfectly sure there was not one member of Council I have worked with with any greater harmony. The death of the late Mayor is unfortunate in may ways, for he was taken from us at the very time he was chairman. As such, there was not a word to be said against his chairmanship, but the Council acted exceedingly well under his guidance, and it is with sorrow we have to put such a motion in the minutes. All the councillors expressed themselves in similar train, and the motion was carried unanimously. The Town Clerk stated that he had received a telegram from Mr Young, the Minister of Water Supply, in which the hon. gentleman deeply regretted the loss the town had sustained by the death of the worthy Mayor.   Funeral of the Late Mayor
  Yesterday being the day fixed for the consignment to the earth of the late Mr. George Knight, was naturally overshadowed by the deepest moral gloom, although the weather was in every respect most pleasant. Very little business of any kind was done about town in the morning, the flags were all hoisted at half-mast, and most of the shops had their shutters up. Punctually at half past 3 p.m., the dreary cheerless tones of the borough bell, which now serves no other purpose than to awaken the inhabitants to a sense of some disaster, clanged out upon the air, and shortly afterwards the sad procession started from the residence of the deceased in Napier street, from thence wending its way slowly along Carlyle street, High street and Tuaggra street, to the cemetery. All the shops were closed without exception in the main thorough- fares, whilst the footpaths were crowded with sympathetic people. The procession was headed by the Maryborough brass band, under Mr. Hodkinson, playing the `Dead March in Saul'. The big drum being muffled in black drapery, and the instruments ornamented with bows of crepe. The Maryborough Volunteer Fire Brigade came next followed by their engine officers and lieutenant. All of them wore black badges. After these came the representation of the Loyal Maryborough Lodge of Freemasons. These gentlemen of the craft all wore their aprons and insignia. Mr. Casey, the undertaker,immediately proceeded the hearse, which was surrounded by members of the borough council, acting, with the family, as chief mourners. A cortege consisting of no less than 46 vehicles and one equestrian followed....
  On the road to the cemetery, the Protestant Alliance Society joined the procession, taking a position immediately behind the band... On arrival at the cemetery, the band and the Protestant Alliance opened out, and the masons passed through them, halted, and opened out... standing around the grave during the ceremony. The Rev. Du Bois read the services of the Church of Eng followed by the Masonic funeral service and the Protestant Alliance service. Throughout the entire route the pathways were lined with people, and there was a vey large number of persons at the cemetery. The expressions of regret at Mr.Knight's death were deep and universal, and made it quite plain that the deceased gentleman was held in the highest esteem by all classes.

• Dunolly and Betbetshire Express Friday 12 May 1882
  Yesterday afternoon were committed to their last resting place, in the Maryborough Cemetery, the remains of Mr George Knight (Mayor of Maryborough), who was injured by being thrown out of his buggy and kicked by the horse, and died on Tuesday last.
  The funeral cortege was of the largest and most imposing character ever witnessed in the town. The deceased gentleman was, at the time of his death, holding not only the highest office in the Borough Council, but was a prominent member of the Order of Freemasons and Protestant Alliance, which no doubt added to the universal respect in which he was held by all who knew him, and tended very materially to increase the interest taken in the proceedings connected with his interment, which took place in the presence of between 600 and 700 persons at least.
  The service at the grave was conducted by Rev H.C. Dubois, who, after conducting the burial service of the Church of Eng, also read that in connection of the brotherhood, and in which the brethren took part. A third service was then read by a member of the Protestant Alliance. The whole of the services were listened to with marked attention. At the conclusion of the last rites the band played that well known piece "Thy will be done" and a little later, before leaving the ground, "Over there" after which the multitude dispersed. The funeral arrangements were in the hands of Mr Casey and were most complete. The order of the procession was as follows: The Maryborough Brigade Band, followed by members of the Fire Brigade, members of the Protestant Alliance, the Order of Freemasons, the hearse, chief mourners, Maryborough Borough Council, members of the Dunolly Borough Council followed by about 80 vehicles, and from 200-300 on foot.
